Notre Dame football players continue to be named on watch lists.

The watch lists for the most prestigious individual award have begun to roll out. Notre Dame football players Brandon Wimbush, Te’von Coney and Jerry Tillery made some lists earlier this week.

The Irish just added two more to those lists.

Center and Notre Dame captain Sam Mustipher was named on the Rimington Trophy Watch List. According to the Rimington Award website, “The Rimington Award is presented to the premier centers in the FCS, Division II, Division III, and NAIA divisions.”

Mustipher is headed into his third season as the consensus starting center with appearances in 34 games and 25 starts under his belt. His veteran experience and knowledge of the game will be massive for the Irish offensive line this year, with fewer experienced guys looking to solidify their starting spots along the line. This isn’t new to Mustipher, as he was also on the award list last year.

Tight End Alize Mack was named to the Mackey Award watch list. The John Mackey Award is presented annually to college football’s most outstanding tight end.

Mack didn’t play a snap in 2016 because of an academic suspension for the year. In 2017, he only caught 19 balls for 166 yards and one touchdown. The reason I say “only” is because he was a former four-star prospect coming out of high school with a massive amount of upside.

He’s had another great spring and it’s never been questioned thats he’s nearly impossible to cover at 6-4, 245 pounds. But this is the year he has to put it all together for the Irish mentally and be the player everyone expects him to be. If he keeps his head in the game, I don’t see why he won’t have a good shot at bringing this award home to South Bend.

Could the Irish add more player to the watch lists? Keep an eye out.
