Could the Kansas City Chiefs and Dexter Williams be a match made in heaven?

Before the 2018 college football season started, we didn’t know what to make of Dexter Williams. He was an ultra-talented recruit and dynamic athlete, but he had yet to reach his full potential during his time in South Bend. Fast forward to today, and Williams is one of the most intriguing running backs in the 2019 draft.

He has fresh legs, improved as pass catcher and as a blocker and is simply a more mature person on and off the field. Williams leaves Notre Dame with a mere 257 carries under his belt at the college level — 158 those coming this past season. Those 257 carries have led to 20 touchdowns; a ratio in the elite category. His 1,636 career rushing yards and 6.4 yards per rush during his time in an Irish uniform show off his outstanding talent.

Notre Dame fans have always been aware of his ability, and certainly the coaches have been aware. It would have been nice to see him carry the load more frequently during his college tenure, because now it seems like his time came and went in a flash. Professional scouts and NFL draft gurus are starting to realize what he could be, and it is an exciting time for him as a player.

NFL Future

With all this said, what teams would be a good fit for someone with Williams’ skill set? The first team that comes to mind is the Kansas City Chiefs. Kansas City is one of the four remaining teams in the playoffs and have one of the most dynamic offenses in the NFL. However, with the Kareem Hunt situation, the Chiefs could be in the market for another mid-round RB option. Enter Dexter Williams — a possible match made in heaven.

When looking at the Chiefs, Dexter makes a ton of sense. While other teams like the Bucs and Raiders running back needs, those teams will be more likely to tackle that need in the early rounds of the draft. The Chiefs are already one of the premier teams in the league, but also have an abundance of needs on the defensive side of the ball — where they were historically bad this past season. Williams will likely fall to the middle rounds, and the Chiefs should swoop on the opportunity to draft someone with his overall upside.

As a Notre Dame fan who follows the careers of many former Irish players, this would be a perfect and exciting landing spot for Dexter. He would compete for a Super Bowl right away and have a good chance at winning a starting job as a rookie.
