There are 4 possible options the Notre Dame staff can choose from. Each bring different assets to the table. The person who gets 4th may be just as interesting as who gets 1st. This is an early start, but here’s the depth chart I have so far. Please know that this could change any week and most likely will.

1. Andrew Hendrix- Andrew is the perfect match for Brian Kelly. He’s big in size and can move around the field. Not only that, he has a decent arm. The only question I have for him is can he lead a team? Only time will tell.
2. Tommy Rees- Tommy Rees has gone through a lot as a quarterback. He’s had his highs and lows. His experience will be his best trait and if Andrew makes a few crucial errors in a game, expect Tommy to be there waiting for his name to be called.
3. Everett Golson- Golson is young, but his talent is growing as time goes on. I don’t think this is his year, but he will definitely give Andrew a run for his money next year.
4. Gunner Kiel- I like this kid a lot, so I expect him to have the best chance to move up around the depth chart. He has a lot of expectations after choosing ND over LSU. I can’t see him being used too much this year, I feel he should learn the ropes of Kelly’s offense and continue to develop his game on the practice field.

In the very intense quarterback situation in South Bend, there seems to be a front runner. As expected, Dayne Crist is getting most of the 1st team reps, with Tommy Rees getting some in as well. So, what does this mean?

Basically, Dayne is heading toward the starting role. I’m not saying it can’t change, but that looks like where it is headed. As for the incoming freshmen QBs (Andrew Hendrix and Everett Golson), they are going to get their chance, according to Brian Kelly. They probably won’t get first or second on the depth chart, but at least they are going to get the chance. This will be great experience for them down the road.

Dayne has the experience over Tommy, as well as the athleticism. However, he needs to prove to Brian Kelly that he still has the mobility and the ability to escape pressure. Not necessarily to be a running quarterback, but to have the ability to extend the play. If he can prove this and remain healthy, Dayne should be the starter and remain the starter.

No one likes being the back up, but Tommy should be ready go in at anytime because I believe if Dayne isn’t performing up to the standards Coach Kelly expects, then he should not hesitate to put in Tommy. He proved himself worthy last year so I wouldn’t be upset to see the  him in.

Both are strong contenders for the starting quarterback job, however, with Dayne Crist, we have a terrific shot at a BCS berth.

The starting quarterback job is as open as it has ever been in recent memory. It appears Dayne Crist has the upper hand despite getting injured halfway through the season and also going through surgery, but the skill and talent of Tommy Rees, Andrew Hendrix, and Everett Golson make this a special race.

Sooner or later, Brian Kelly will have to make a decision either way on who has won the starting job.  At a press conference yesterday, Kelly stated that the latest date we will find out who won the job is going to be 10 days before the opening game against South Florida.

I think it is a good decision for Kelly to let everyone know when we should know who is the number one quarterback. It eliminates the suspicion of when we will know and it lets the players know that they have until 10 days before the game to impress the coaches. All around good move by Coach Kelly.
