Saint John’s had 7 runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 12-2 dimolishing of Notre Dame. The Irish dropped to 29-26, while St. John’s improved to 34-21 on the season.

Facing elimination, Notre Dame will play tomorrow against Seton Hall. The Scarlet Knights lost their first round matchup with #3 seed Seton Hall, 6-1.

Freshman pitcher Pat Connaughton did not retire a single batter from Saint John’s. He gave up 5 straight hits to open the game and all 8 batters that Connaughton faced reached base as St. John’s rolled out to a 7-0 lead. Certainly not the way Connaughton thought this game would go.

Sophomore 1B Trey Mancini, who won last night’s home run derby, went 3-for-4 with a 3 singles and a run scored. Senior RF Alex Robinson also added a 3-hit game. He went 3-for-3 with a run scored. Freshman LF Mac Hudgins went 1-for-3 with an RBI single and junior CF Charlie Markson added a sacrifice fly.

Despite all of the hits, Notre Dame couldn’t capture fire on offense. The Irish had a leadoff base runner in every inning from the 3rd inning on, but could not find a way to score.

For the complete box score, click here.

The game between Notre Dame and Seton Hall will start at 10am, and it could be the Irish’s final game of the season if they don;t win. The game can be seen on bigeast.tv.

Notre Dame will open up the 2012 Big East Baseball Tournament against the Saint John’s Red Storm. As I said in yesterday’s post, Notre Dame will be the 7th seed while Saint John’s will be the 2nd seed.

The Irish finished the regular season 29-25, and 14-13 in the Big East. The record is nothing to brag about, but they have been playing good baseball recently. They are winners are 4 out of their last 7 games and are losses have been rebounded by a win.

The Red Storm ended their season 33-21 with a conference record of 18-9. Dominating conference play, Saint John’s won their 7th regular season title in program history. They were preseason favorites and certainly have lived up to those expectaions so far.

Notre Dame will play either the winner or loser, depending on its result against Saint John’s, of the 3 seed Seton Hall and No. 6 seed Rutgers tilt at either 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. Thursday.

Head-to-Head This Year- Saint John’s owned the Irish this year, going 3-0 against them. Back in late April, Notre Dame lost both doubleheader games, 6-4 to Saint John’s and also lost two days later 3-1 to the Storm. Let’s hope the Irish do not play like they did back then.

Player to Watch- As a Notre Dame fan, expect the stars to play at their best. 1B Trey Mancini needs to come up big for the Irish. His power (12 home runs and 44 RBIs on the year) could be the most important aspect to Notre Dame’s offense. I don’t think ND can win this game based on pitching and defense, Saint John’s is just too good to do that. The Irish need runs and they need them badly. Hopefully Mancini comes up big for the Domers.

Score Prediction- Notre Dame 3, Saint John’s 7

Saint John’s will show up to play and overpower ND. This may not be the end, because the tournaent is double-eliminaton.

Game-time: 1pm ET on Wednesday
