Notre Dame and Seton Hall played each other for the 3rd time in a row. For the Pirates, this was a good thing. The Irish lost their 3rd straight to Seton Hall with a 2-0 loss earlier Saturday afternoon. The Irish dropped to 17-13 overall and 4-5 in the Big East, while the Pirates improved to 16-14 and 5-4 in the conference.

As it has the entire series, Seton Hall’s pitching was excellent. Seton Hall RHP Brian Gilbert threw a four-hit, complete game shutout today. The only time the Irish made any noise was the 9th inning. After an error and a wild pitch, the Irish had runners on 2nd and 3rd base. owever, Glbert buckled down and struck out Alex Robinson swinging for the 2nd out.

The Notre Dame coaching staff called on freshman pinch hitter Alex Carter. Gilbert’s first pitch got away from Seton Hall C Dillon Hamlin and rolled to the backstop. Mancini initially hesitated before breaking for home. His slight hesitation was costly as Hamlin raced back to the ball and threw accurately and in time toGilbert, who tagged Mancini for the 3rd and final out.

Notre Dame’s starting pitcher Pat Connaughton pitched 1.1 innings, then he left the game due to what appeared to be a blister on his throwing hand. He was charged with the loss and is now 1-2 as a starter.

Notre Dame will play next at 3:05 ET on Tuesday, Apr. 10 for a non-conference game with Michigan State.

They took no hitters into the 6th and 8th innings each game. But, it wasn’t enough. Seton Hall scored late to win both games. The Irish held a 3-2 lead with two outs in the bottom of the ninth of the opener, but Zack Granite’s two-strike, RBI double off Notre Dame sophomore closer Dan Slania.

In the second game, Notre Dame took a 2-0 lead into the 8th; but yet again, failed to close it out. A double by Dillon Hamlin and back to back singles by Zach Granite and Mike Genovese gave the Pirates the tie. The Pirates ending winning the game in the 11th inning to take both games.
