Boxx back in lineup

Shannon Boxx can breathe a sigh a relief. She is back on the starting eleven for the United States game today against Sweedon. Boxx was a Notre Dame star and she is performing well on the national stage.

Boxx is 34 years old. She has been a presence for the USA for awhile and was a little sluggish and banged up after the first match of the women’s World Cup. The US have clinched to the next round and are looking to at least tie Sweedon and avoid Germany (favorite to win) in the first round.

USA tops Columbia, Boxx is now well rested

Today in the Women’s World Cup, the American girls defeated Columbia by a score of 3-0. It was a total domination by our ladies and we controlled the game with 27 shots taken. The goals were scored by Heather O’Reilly, Megan Rapinoe, and Carli Lloyd. To see highlights of the game click here.

Shannon Boxx, a former Notre Dame soccer star, didn’t play for the U.S. today. This is very good for us in the long run because she is 34 years old, and needed the rest. The World Cup can take a toll on anyone of any age, but especially since she is getting old for a soccer player. The Coach admits that their is plenty of resources on the bench to use so she wasn;t afraid to take Boxx out when she wasn’t playing well and looked a little sluggish.

Look for Shannon to come back next game re-energized and ready to go if she is called back into the lineup or subbed in. The USA play their next game against Sweeden (they need at least a tie to win the group) on July 6th.

Shannon Boxx may be benched for Columbia game

Coach Sundhage may change up her lineup for this Saturday’s game against Columbia. Unfortunately, it might be our very own Shannon Boxx.

She didn’t play well against North Korea. Her distribution with the ball was lacking and she was seemingly not a presence in the game. I know it can be tough to be on your game every game, everyone has those days. But, this is the World Cup and the USA doesn’t have time for any slip-ups.

Today in practice, it was Lori Lindseyand Carli Lloyd in the center of the U.S. midfield, not Shannon Boxx. For me, Boxx’s will eventually back in the line-up because her game will step up and she is tough to deal with in the air and her physicality can overpower others.
