Before the 9th inning, Villanova had managed just one base hit after the 1st inning against Irish RHP Pat Connaughton and sophomore Sean Fitzgerald, but that all changed during their final trip to the plate.

Fitzgerald gave up 4 staright singles to the Wildcats to start out the 9th inning. After Villanova cut the lead to 5-2. Notre Dame brought on closer Dan Slania. Slania recorded to outs before giving up a 2-run single to Villanova’s Kevin Wager. Now the tying run was on 3rd base.

Dan Slania finsihed the job in the clutch, when Tyler Sciacca flew out to right field to end the game. This was Slania’s 10th conference save of the season.

Connaughton earned the victory and improved to 3-3 on the campaign. He gave up 1 earned run on 6.0 innings of work. Pat struck out a career-best 7 and walked just 2.

Sophomore 1B Trey Mancini and junior C Joe Hudson provided all the offense Notre Dame needed. Mancini went 1-3 with an 3 RBIs. Hudson went 1-4 with a 2-run single.

After an upsetting loss to Villanova on Friday, the Irish came back with a 6-0 win over the Wildcats on Saturday. Notre Dame improved to 24-22 overall and 10-10 in the Big East, while the Wildcats dropped to 27-21 and 9-11.

Notre Dame junior RHP Adam Norton struck out a career-high 9 in a complete game shutout of Villanova. ND needed Norton to step up big, and he answered the call.

This season, Adam Norton has pitched 81.0 innings. Remarkably, he’s issued only 4 walks, which is 2nd in the NCAA for fewest walks allowed per 9 innings.

Norton retired 18 of the last 20 batters in the game, including the final 8 Wildcats. Adam Norton is now 4-3 on the season.

CF Charlie Markson led the Irish in hitting. He went 3-4 with nearly a cycle. Markson had a single, double. and a home run. In total, he had 3 RBIs.

Notre Dame is only 2 games behind Rutgers for 6th place. The Irish are pretty safe for the Big East Tournament, because they are 3 games ahead of 9th place South Florida (top 8 teams qualify for the Conference Tournament).

Villanova got a walk-off RBI single from Paul Rambaud in the bottom of the 9th inning to beat Notre Dame, 10-9. The Wildcats improved to 27-20 overall and 9-10 in the Big East, while the Irish dropped to 23-22 and 9-10.

Image from und.com

Notre Dame made a great comeback in the 9th inning, tying the ball game 9-9. With 2 outs and 2 strikes, pinch hitter Blaise Lezynski hit a double to tie the dramatic game up.

The game wasn’t tied for long, because on the bottom of the same inning (which happend to be the 9th), Villanova answered. After a walk and a single, Paul Rambaud hit a single down the left field line to plate the winning run.

RHP Matt Ternowchek (ND) gave up the RBI single in the 9th, but he wasn’t given the loss. After 0.2 innings of work in the 9th, LHP Joe Spano (ND) was handed the loss because he left after he had given up the walk to start the rally. Spano is now 0-4 on the season.

Stephen Ostapeck (NOVA) earned the victory and improved to 4-2. He allowed 1 earned run on 2 hits in 0.2 innings of work.

Defense killed the Irish last night. 7 of the 10 runs given up in the game reached base on an error, hit basemen, or walk. 5 total errors led to 6 unearned runs for Notre Dame. They won’t stand a chance in the conference1 tournament if they play bad defense, it simply just can’t happen.
