Brian Kelly announced that the former 5-star Running Back from Delray Beach, Florida is ineligible. Bryant’s father, Greg, told Scout.com that Bryant is academically ineligible.
Bryant’s father told IrishIllustrated’s Pete Sampson that, “He’s coming back as a student, having nothing to do with athletics. Of course I’m trying to influence him, but he needs to show he can stay at Notre Dame and is capable. He needs to take care of business at Notre Dame.”
Based on his father’s comments, it seems reasonable to believe that Bryant will return in 2016 if he can bring his grades up.
Kelly announced the suspension in statement, saying, “There are certain expectations within our program that must be met on a daily basis. Quite simply, Greg did not meet those expectations.”
During his Sophomore year, Bryant carried the ball 54 times for 289 yards with 3 touchdowns.
This most recent suspension of a high profile Notre Dame player further emboldens college football coaches who negatively recruit against the Irish. Coaches are currently telling recruits that Notre Dame is too difficult.
Kelly also announced that Linebacker Michael Deeb and Tight End Mike Heuerman will be placed on medical scholarships. In other words, the two players are physically unable to compete but are still able to stay in school on Notre Dame’s dime.
These suspensions and medical scholarships leave the door open for 5th year players, Defensive End Ishaq Williams and Tight End Chase Hounshell. Ishaq Williams is facing his own eligibility issue. Notre Dame and Williams are currently waiting on the official word from the NCAA.
As always, there is no downtime with Notre Dame football.
