Ian Book originally committed to Washington State on April 11, 2015. However, following a visit to South Bend on August 1st, he committed to the Irish on August 4th.
Book holds offers from Notre Dame, Boise State, Idaho, UNLV and Washington State. The 247Sports Composite ranks him as the 22nd Pro-Style Quarterback prospect in the 2016 class. He ranks as the 596th overall player. He rates a 3-star prospect.
The Sunshine state signal caller measures 6’1″ and weighs in at 190 lbs.
As a Junior, Ian Book threw for 2025 yards with 18 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. During the 2014 campaign, Book completed 62.5% of his passes. As a Sophomore, he was much more productive. Book threw for 2558 yards with 30 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. He completed 60.0% of his throws.
Recently, Notre Dame has recruited elite Quarterbacks. In 2013, Malik Zaire ranked as the 5th Dual-Threat Quarterback. In 2014, DeShone Kizer ranked as the 12th Pro-Style Quarterback. In 2015, Brandon Wimbush ranked as the 3rd Dual-Threat Quarterback. All players rated as 4-star prospects.
So, why did the Irish coaching staff pursue a signal-caller ranked in the 20s and rated as a 3-star prospect? At this point, it is not clear. However, Notre Dame is likely fading with 2017 5-star Quarterback Hunter Johnson.
Additionally, the coaching staff may be anticipating or preparing for the transfer of DeShone Kizer. During fall camp, if Wimbush beats Kizer for the backup spot, Kizer may choose to transfer. Of course, this has not happened yet but it is possible. If he were to transfer, the Irish would be left with only two scholarship Quarterbacks for the 2016 season.
