Sometime between now and the end of fall camp, Notre Dame Head Coach Brian Kelly will announce the captains for the 2015 season. Unlike other years, the Fighting Irish have a slew of candidates including two returning Captain from 2014. Kelly said, “So I’m not in a hurry to name [captains] … because the group is running pretty good on their own right now. For me not naming them is not one of indecision or that we don’t have any. We have too many, more than anything else.” Here are 10 players who may serve as Notre Dame football captains in 2015:
Nick Martin – Sr. – Offensive Linemen – Notre Dame Football
The 5th-year Senior Offensive Linemen from Indianapolis, Indiana is a slam dunk to be one of the captains in 2015. Martin served as one of four captains in 2014 along with Defensive Back Austin Collinsworth, Running Back Cam McDaniel and Defensive Linemen Sheldon Day. In the modern era, no player has been elected as a captain in their Junior season of eligibility and not been elected during their Senior year of eligibility.
However, this year is unique. Notre Dame has several candidates for captaincy. Theoretically, Kelly and players could go in a different direction but that is extremely unlikely. Martin is a lock to be one of Notre Dame’s captains in 2015.
If elected as one of the captains, Martin will become one of 18 two-time captains. Nick’s brother and current Cowboys Offensive Guard Zack Martin is one of the 18 two-time captains. Zack was one of Notre Dame’s captains in 2012 and 2013.
Martin has started along the Offensive Line since 2013. He has played Center and Guard for the Fighting Irish. Martin will start at Center in 2015. Having a Center as captain is favorable because the Center touches the ball on every play and is in charge of making the calls like the Quarterback.
