Jaylon Smith – Jr. – Linebacker – Notre Dame Football
Jaylon Smith has grown into his leadership role during his time at Notre Dame. Smith has started every game of his Notre Dame career. During that time, he has grown from a skinny Freshman with great talent to a monster Junior.
As stated earlier, it is important for Notre Dame’s captains to be the best players. Along with Ronnie Stanley, Smith may be the best player on the Notre Dame football roster. Teammates naturally gravitate to the team’s top players.
Smith’s chances may be hampered by the player that lines up next to him on 95% of the snaps, Joe Schmidt. Schmidt is the undisputed leader of the defense. It may be difficult to have three voices of the defense. Currently, there are only two voices of the defense: Linebacker Joe Schmidt and Defensive Coordinator Brian VanGorder. There may not be room for anymore.
