Gonzaga’s Kyle Wiltjer may be the best pure scorer in the NCAA. The Kentucky transfer is averaging 20.6 points per game, 3.1 assists and over seven rebounds in a solid start, following up a 2015 season in which he was named WCC Newcomer of the Year and a consensus second-team All-American. Overall, the 6’ 10” senior is probably a top-ten talent across all positions; he just needs to add a bit more muscle. With a lightning-fast jumper and an improved post presence, Wiltjer is shooting 48 percent from the field, with a true shooting percentage of 59 percent. He’s a threat from outside the arc, as well, shooting at a 37 percent clip from down town, giving the Bulldogs one of the most dangerous scoring threats in the nation.
Gonzaga, checking in at #20 in the AP poll, is 6-2 with Wiltjer leading the way, notching wins over Washington and UConn and losses to only tough opponents: Texas A&M and Arizona. With Center Przemek Karnowski sidelined with back spasms, the Zags have struggled, and the bad news is that he may not be back any time soon. WIltjer and forward Domantas Sabonis will need to step up their game if they hope to maintain the level of play that is expected out of the program Mark Few has built at Gonzaga.
