19 points, six rebounds and five assists per game are good numbers for anyone, and if you don’t find it a habit staying up late for west coast basketball, you may have missed Cal’s Tyrone Wallace. Granted, it’s early in the season, but Wallace seems to have found a consistency that has eluded him in the past. He’s shooting 51 percent from the floor with a true shooting percentage of 57 percent on a Cal team with a lot of talented youth that is looking to come together. At 6’ 5”, Wallace has the size to be a solid perimeter defender as well, especially when he’s matched up on the opposing team’s primary ball handler.
With losses to San Deigo State and Richmond, The Golden Bears will need to make some noise in an upcoming out-of-conference game at Virginia or in the Pac 12 to get noticed by the committee in March. However, the Bears did pull in a top-five recruiting class last year, so it’s on Cal Coach Cuonzo Martin to have those freshmen playing like juniors and seniors to give Wallace a little help as the season wears on. Wallace was a first-team all Pac 12 selection last year, and there’s no reason to believe that if he keeps up his current production, he’ll see similar recognition at the end of this season.
