With a 60 percent true shooting percentage, Oklahoma’s Buddy Hield is averaging 21 points per game to go along with five boards, 2 assists and a steal. Hailing from the Bahamas, the 6’ 4” Hield was the 2015 Big 12 Conference Player of the Year, and has followed up that campaign nicely to this point. It’s Hield’s consistency and shooting that power an Oklahoma offense that is averaging 87 points per game through its first six games. Garnering comparisons to Jodie Meeks from NBA scouts, Hield has great outside range (he’s shooting 48 percent from three on the season) to go with an improved mid-range game and scoring ability.
With a win over Villanova, the seventh-ranked Sooners have solidified themselves as a top team nationally, and a favorite to compete for a top seed in the NCAA tournament in March. Playing in the Big 12 means plenty of opportunities against other top-ranked teams, as Oklahoma plays Iowa State, Kansas, West Virginia and Baylor twice in conference play. Finishing at or near the top of the Big 12, with a gauntlet like that, and a run in the Big 12 tournament could see Oklahoma find itself in a good spot to make a deep run in the tournament. If that is the case, Buddy Hield may find his name in the Player of the Year discussion.
