It’s not a secret. Virginia’s Malcolm Brogdon is one of the best perimeter defenders in college basketball, and he proved that last year when he was named the ACC Co-defensive Player of the Year. It’s the improvements that he’s made to his offensive game that make him the best player on a top-ten Virginia team that hasn’t seen a whole lot of drop off with Justin Anderson going to the NBA. Brogdon garnered a ton of recognition in 2015, being named a second-team All-American and First-team All ACC. All he’s done to follow up that performance is to average 17 points on 48 percent shooting to go along with four boards and two assists per game so far this year.
With a true shooting percentage of 58 percent, Brogdon mixes his lock-down ability on defense with an efficiency on the offense end that has lead the Cavaliers to early-season wins over Ohio State and West Virginia. Despite an early loss to George Washington, Virginia is still ranked in the top ten nationally, and will face Villanova – another top 10 squad – before entering conference play. With conference showdowns that include Miami and Louisville twice, North Carolina and Duke, Brogdon and the Cavaliers will have every opportunity to earn their keep in the form of a high seed from the committee in March.
