22 points per game on a 65 true-shooting percentage for a top ten, defending national champion Duke squad are enough to land Grayson Allen on our list of top shooting guards. Though the 6’ 4” guard struggled against top competition (Duke lost to Kentucky in a game in which Allen had only six points and four turnovers), Coach K’s squad is still 8-1 and ranked in the top 10 nationally. He’s knocking down a blistering 46 percent of his three point tries and shooting 50 percent overall, the kind of range and efficiency that cannot be ignored. He could be a better passer (he only picks up about three assists per game), and he would benefit greatly from developing an effective dribble with the left hand.
Duke will compete with the likes of Virginia, Miami, Louisville and North Carolina for positioning in the ACC, as well as a date with 25th-ranked Utah before the conference slate starts. Allen probably won’t compete for Player of the Year nationally, and he’s got some very stiff competition for the same honor in the ACC, but with his improved jump shot, he certainly has All-American potential. Look for him to emerge has a seasoned veteran – relative to the youth on this team and due to his experience in the NCAA tournament last year – despite being only a sophomore.
