Notre Dame takes one step back in its run towards the ACC Tournament and beyond.

There’s an old saying about playing with matches will get you burned and another that states that if you play with fire, you’ll pee the bed at night. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish basketball team proved both sayings correct Saturday night in its last second loss to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 63-62.

What had made Notre Dame’s previous little run though it’s ACC opponents in the last few weeks were games like the Clemson win. The Irish went on the road and beat the Tigers after coming from behind and beating the top ranked North Carolina Tar Heels.

It felt like it was supposed to be like that in Atlanta against Georgia Tech, after a come from behind victory over Louisville. Notre Dame fell behind early and shot the ball poorly. To make matters worse, Notre Dame got beat up on the glass and inside the paint.

After coming back in the second half, Notre Dame saw a 4 point lead dwindle to one point until finally Georgia Tech completed their own comeback and dropped a shot in with one second left- game over.

Despite Notre Dame’s fantastic February run this far, it has been close, and one bounce this way or that way and they could be in much worse shape. They played with fire, or skinned a cat, or buried a butter knife or something and they lost.

The only thing left is everything. Finish the season strong (beat Miami) and enter the ACC Tournament ready to repeat as the champions. Fire be damned.
