Notre Dame should start the season ranked in the top 15.

It’s May and no one is really thinking too much or giving too much credence to preseason rankings (no, not even the WAY TOO EARLY BUT CLICK ON ME ANYWAYS rankings). Well… maybe one person is, and we should be listening.

Phil Steele currently has Notre Dame slotted at #11. This isn’t his personal ranking, or computer ranking, but his prediction for where the Associated Press will slot Notre Dame before the season begins. Historically, Steele is fairly accurate when posting his AP predictions- which he will tell you about at length and many, many times within his preseason preview magazine.

While most Irish fans are “iffy” about the potential that this season has, starting off ranked (and then backing that ranking and climbing) has its advantages once the playoff committee sits down. It’s not the map, but a guideline.
