Notre Dame Football Recruiting: Getting A Quarterback
By Walt Kosin
The Notre Dame Football recruiting machine snags a blue-chip for 2018.
Notre Dame got a verbal commit from its first player in the 2018 class and what a commit it is. The Fighting Irish got the verbal from Phil Jurkovic, the number one dual threat quarterback in the 2018 class.
Jurkovic is a four-star who is 6”5” and 205 lbs. from Pine Richland High School in Gibsonia, Pennsylvania. He is just finishing his sophomore year and his statistics are already through the roof. Jurkovic was 176 of 264 (67%) in pass attempts for 2,560 yards and he threw for 20 touchdowns and had only four interceptions. He also ran for 1,250 yards and had 11 rushing touchdowns.
Jurkovic chose Notre Dame over some of the best football colleges in the country. He was pursued by Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Michigan State, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and UCLA. He also chose Notre Dame over local favorites Pitt, Penn State, and West Virginia.
Jurkovic chose Notre Dame not only because of its great football tradition and its academics, but also for the spiritual aspects of the university. It’s evident that he chose Notre Dame for all the right reasons.
Jurkovic loves to study the game and put in the mental work necessary to become a great quarterback. It is interesting to know how well be runs. He is able to run the ball when it is necessary and it is amazing that someone as large as he ran for over 1,000 yards as a sophomore! Having someone of his stature as the first person in his 2018 class, bodes well for ND recruiting. Hopefully other elite recruits will want to jump on the Fighting Irish 2018 recruiting bandwagon. He could be a magnet for the entire class.
Western Pennsylvania has been very good for Notre Dame recruiting in the last few months. They have signed Josh Ligg, a four-star offensive lineman, linebacker David Adams, and defensive Kurt Hinish, all from the Pittsburgh area.
Western Pennsylvania has sent four legendary quarterbacks to Notre Dame including Johnny Lujack, Terry Henratty, Tom Clements, and Joe Montana. They all have something important in common. All won a national championship.
Hopefully for Notre Dame fans, history will repeat itself with Phil Jurkovic at quarterback.
