Notre Dame Football: First Thoughts On Texas
Notre Dame meets Texas to start the season.
A few years ago, this game looked HUGE on the radar of huge games in college football, and guess what…. IT STILL IS.
Now, the Notre Dame and Texas game isn’t nearly as sexy as we had hoped it would be. Texas has looked quite mediocre over the past few years, and their win total has suffered a tremendous drop and with that drop comes the removal of some of the sparkle.
Last year, Notre Dame destroyed Texas 38-3 and exploited their weaknesses at quarterback. Despite those weaknesses, Texas was still able to beat both Baylor and Oklahoma. So, in a manner of speaking, Notre Dame was the key to a bowl game season for the Longhorns last year (of course more logical reasoning would be to point to the Cal and Iowa State losses as the reason for a losing record).
So, Texas was a very unpredictable team last year, and they could have been closer to 8-4 rather than 5-7.
Where does that put them in 2016? Texas still has a problem at quarterback no matter what is coming out of Austin, and outside of Malik Jefferson, the team as a whole seemed soft even after Charlie Strong has made all (or most) of his roster cuts.
It seems like everyone outside of Texas is looking at this game as a real test for the Irish. Those closer to the Longhorn program don’t come off as very confident at all.
This game is THE game that weekend- or at least on that Sunday after the schools moved the date to please the television nation that we all are as college football fans. So, whatever happens, it’s bound to be big and a setup for the season.
