How important is the sellout streak at Notre Dame Stadium to the program and to the fans?

Notre Dame LOVES numbers (and has beefed up their math department if you needed more proof than what you are about to read). Numbers are everywhere when it comes to Notre Dame:

  • 11 National Championships
  • 7 Heisman Trophies
  • 83 Consensus All-Americans
  • 492 NFL Draft Picks
  • 249 Consecutive Sellouts at Notre Dame Stadium

Those are some relatively colossal numbers, and the very best combination and collection in the entire country.

The number I’m interested in right now is that 249 game sellout streak.
It’s second in the country to Nebraska which holds a 297 game sellout streak (further note… Notre Dame has sold out 297 times out of the last 298 games).

According to Omaha.com however, Nebraska may be in danger in the not so distant future of losing the streak. Skyrocketing costs are obviously the biggest threat, but the other dangers can be almost equally taxing such as a bad opponent, and good television coverage.

Like Notre Dame, Nebraska uses corporate donors and friends of the program, to sell out games against far inferior opponents. So, these massive streaks that both universities celebrate and promote, are more A machination of smoke and mirrors and juiced up tickets than actual fan demand.

This brings me to this obscure but important question: does the home sellout streak at Notre Dame Stadium mean anything to you? When comparing programs does this feat ever come up in the conversation?

I would venture to say most of you do not really care about this stat or record. I would also venture to say, that most of you already know the ticket sales can be misleading due to friends of the program that come up big, like buying 300 tickets and then giving them away for charity- or something like that.

So, does any of this really matter to you the fan? Maybe not, but it could if Notre Dame ever had to truly justify its prices for football games at Notre Dame Stadium. Why are you paying $150 for one game and then $120 for another- and the latter needed “help” to sell out?

Just being curious here, and I say this record means about as much as beating Ball State. Sure, you add it o the total, but it adds nothing of real value.
