Notre Dame cornerback Devin Butler injured again.
During Fiesta Bowl prep last season senior cornerback Devin Butler fractured his foot and was forced to sit out game and spring practice. On Monday it got worse for Butler as reports came out that he refractured that same foot. Butler is supposed to miss 14-16 weeks, and if all goes well it would have him back by in mid-October at the earliest.
Butler was slated to compete with Nick Watkins, Shaun Crawford and Nick Coleman for the corner spot opposite of Cole Luke. Butler played the last few games of 2015 after Kei’Varae Russell went down with a broken leg, and performed reasonably well. Now Watkins, Coleman and possibly one of the incoming freshman will not compete for that cornerback spot. Personally, I could see incoming freshman Troy Pride seriously competing for this spot. He has some serious cover and ball skills. As for Crawford, I see him playing more a nickel position rather than a true cornerback spot.
Irish fans have to be frustrated with the amount of injuries that have been sustained over the past year. Last season the Irish we’re ravaged by injuries to some of their key players. Malik Zaire, Tarean Folston and Jarron Jones all were plagued by season ending injuries.
Next: Let's Talk About Troy Pride
There are always going to be injuries when it comes to football, but it feels like we have seen an unusual amount of major injuries over the past year. Hopefully Butler is an outlier when it comes to injuries in 2016. Notre Dame has a chance to have a special season this year and one of the only things that could hold them back is injuries.
