Best Notre Dame NBA Players of All Time
By Bobby Norell
Austin Carr – Shooting Guard
Depending on who you talk to, Carr is considered the best player to ever play at Notre Dame. He had a very productive collegiate career as he amassed 2,560 points, which is fifth most in NCAA history and first in Notre Dame history. While at Notre Dame he became just the second player ever to tally over 1,000 points in a season. The other player being Pete Maravich, you may have heard of him. Carr also holds some NCAA Tournament records such as points in a single game (61), field goal makes (25) and attempts (44). He also holds the NCAA Tournament record for points per game with 50. Many of these records may never be broken. Carr is easily one of the best college basketball players of all time.
He was drafted first overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1971 NBA Draft. Because of injury he never enjoyed quite the success he had in college, but still had a very productive career. Carr had a 10 year career, with his best season coming in 1973-74. In that year Carr was named an All-Star and averaged 21.9 points. For many years Carr was the lone bright spot on a lot of bad Cavaliers teams. In his nine season with the Cavs, Carr only made the post season three times while finishing with a losing record the other six.
Carr finished his career in 1980-81 with the Dallas Mavericks and the Washington Bullets. The Cavs retired his number in 1981. Carr is currently the color analyst for the Cavs. Outside of LeBron James, Carr might be the most beloved Cav of all time.
