Notre Dame football: Three big questions entering fall camp
By Greg Hadley
Will there be an end to the red zone woes?
Notre Dame’s red zone offense has been, in the past few years, terrible.
There’s just no other way to say it. The Irish finished 88th in red zone offense last season, 80th the year before and 77th in 2013. If you were wondering why the team has seemed good but not quite elite in that stretch, that’s the reason why. It’s not due to a lack of opportunity. It’s just a failure to finish things off.
DeShone Kizer did not even seem to improve as time went on last season, as he completely fell apart against Boston College in November. Everett Golson was notorious for fumbling away the ball. Tommy Rees was Tommy Rees. Again, when this sort of thing persists over years and across personnel, you have to wonder whether coaching may be to blame.
There’s no denying Brian Kelly is a good coach, and he has done plenty to restore Notre Dame football to glory. But these questions are legitimate ones that will reveal whether he can elevate himself to the level of legend.
