Notre Dame sent out 6 offers on Thursday and one was to Oakland, California standout, Jevon Holland.

Holland is a 4 star two-way player who also returns kicks for his Division 5 State Champion winning program, Bishop O’Dowd.

I spoke with Holland yesterday about his Notre Dame offer, his recruitment and his interesting father.

“Coach Polian, he called me. I’ve been recently getting followed by the defensive coordinator and the director of player personnel from Notre Dame. I was receiving a lot of attention from them,” Holland said when I asked who had been in contact with him. He explained more.

“I’ve been speaking with Coach Kearney. I’ve been talking to him for a while. He said that they sat down as a group and watched my film and they liked me at safety. They decided to make a decision to offer me tonight.”

I then asked Holland which other schools had been contacting him consistently. He explained.

“Oregon, they’ve been talking to me for a little bit. Washington State, a lot of Pac-12 schools like Arizona, Utah, Cal, UCLA, USC has been showing some interest in me, and Colorado….. I’m open to all schools who’ve offered me and Notre Dame is definitely one of them.”

Holland then spoke to me about his overall thoughts on Notre Dame.

“Like I told the coaches, I haven’t had a lot of depth in knowledge of Notre Dame. I’ve seen that they’re a powerhouse school. They have some weight to their name much like Michigan or Ohio State. I know of guys that came into the league and are still in the league (from Notre Daame).”

“Manti Teo, Golden Tate, Will Fuller, those are all guys that I’ve seen play when I was growing up. I’ve seen them all making a difference on the football field. I always see them wearing that they’ve played for the Irish.”

I then asked Holland which safety position he feels he projects at most. He had a definite answer.

“I see myself as a free safety. I’m rangy and long. I can get sideline to sideline. I can move if they need me to come down and fill some gaps, I think I’ll be able to do that. Definitely free safety.”

Holland then spoke to me about visiting Notre Dame.

“They talked to me about it right after (the offer) that I should come down to visit. That’s the next step in recruiting. It’s definitely a school I’d like to visit. It’s a big time school. I’ll talk to my parents but I’ll most likely visit this summer.”

I asked him what he would like to study in college. Here’s what he had to say.

“I haven’t really gotten a specific idea yet. I know that I want to study something in business and communication and marketing. I’m good with people. I think that would play to my advantage.”

During the conversation, I found out that Jevon has NFL bloodlines.

“My dad played DB in the pros, so he gave me a lot of insight. He’s been teaching me a lot about defensive back since I was little.”

“He played in the league for the 49ers from ’90 to ’93. He then went up to Canada, where I was born and played for the BC Lions and the Edmonton Eskimos and he coached there for a couple of years. He coached my high school team in my freshman and sophomore years.”

“He’s a professional trainer. He’s trained a lot of division 1 and pro athletes in all different kinds of sports from ice skating to soccer to lacrosse to gymnastics, the whole nine.”

I noticed when I saw Jevon Holland tweet his Notre Dame offer that he had a shamrock next to his Twitter name. Fans on message boards were speculating, as was I, that he was a Notre Dame fan. Turns out that wasn’t the case.

“There’s a saying me and my brother came up with, “I’m not lucky, I’m prepared.” The clover represents that saying.”

Notre Dame will continue to work to get Jevon Holland on campus this offseason.
