Notre Dame football staff continues to look to add talent along the defensive line.

Darnell Jeffries was offered a scholarship from Notre Dame yesterday, bringing his total offers to 13.

Right now, he holds offers from Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Notre Dame, Oregon, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Colorado State, South Carolina, Wake Forest and West Virginia.

So far in the ’18 class, Notre Dame has only Jayson Ademilola committed at defensive tackle. The Irish are likely looking to add 2 or 3 more and they think Jeffries would be a great addition.

Jeffries has good size at 6’3, 265 pounds but he will definitely need to add weight to be able to compete at the college level at his position. He definitely has the frame to do so and as a junior in high school, he’s coming along just fine size-wise.

He has a really quick and explosive get off. He doesn’t have great top, or long, speed but shows really good short speed and quickness. He consistently blows up the backfield due to this trait.

Jeffries is a very aggressive, even violent, football player. He has extremely strong hands. Once he gets one handful of jersey or any part of a ball carrier, it’s over. They aren’t going anywhere but the ground. He often slams ball carriers to the turf.

He also shows great instincts with his instant reactions to the backfield and keeps his pad level low, helping him change direction quickly and effectively. He also proves to be great at getting his hands up and batting down balls.

Jeffries also lines up at defensive end. Like most top high school defensive lineman, his coach moves him up and down the line to have him attack different part of the offense. He shows that he’s versatile and can play on the end well.

I think that if Jeffries continues to work hard and grow to be over 280 pounds, he will be a starter at the college level, and a good one at that.

I never feel confident in Notre Dame’s chances with recruits from Georgia. That being said, two things come to mind.

  1. Notre Dame just received a commitment from Derrik Allen, one of the best players in the state of Georgia.
  2. Mike Elston, Mike Elko and Clark Lea are proving they can recruit great players nation-wide.

Notre Dame staff will work to get Darnell Jeffries on campus for a visit. Like any recruit, once they get to South Bend for a visit, anything can happen.
