Top WR recruit, Kevin Austin will visit Notre Dame this spring.

The Irish staff are very interested in Pompano Beach, North Broward Prep receiver Kevin Austin.

The Irish have two pass catchers currently committed in the ’18 class in 6’5 Micah Jones and Oregon speedster, Braden Lenzy.

Notre Dame is looking to add at least one more receiver in this class.  I personally see them adding two more, with how the depth chart looks after adding only one true wide receiver in the last cycle – Jafar Armstrong.

I spoke to Austin a few weeks ago and he told me that he had been hearing from Notre Dame’s Florida area recruiter and running backs coach, Autry Denson often and that they were forming a solid bond.

He hadn’t heard from receivers coach DelVaughn Alexander as much, at that time.

I caught up with him last night to see how his recruitment was going and how his contact and relationship with Notre Dame was coming along.

First, I asked him if there had been any significant shift in his recruitment. Here’s what he had to say.

“There hasn’t been a major change. I’m just coming up on a visit in the spring time for the spring game. It should be really fun. I made the plans last week. It was convenient for me. I had the open weekend so I decided to make the trip up there.”

Austin then told me about the visit he went on since the last time we spoke.

“Duke was really fun. I had a really great time and a really great experience with the coaches and the players.”

The 6’3, 190 pound receiver, Austin, then told me about his impressive showing at the recent Opening event in Florida.

“I went to the Miami Opening. It was really fun. There was great competition, really big names from across south Florida. I competed really well, caught every ball. I won every rep in one on ones and caught all the balls that came towards me. I had a really great time.”

“They tested us for certain things then had us do individual drills and then we did some 1 on 1 and 7 on 7. I won the wide receiver MVP for that camp.I got invited up to Oregon to go compete in the finals.”

Kevin Austin has gotten a lot more attention from Power 5 programs recently. Here’s what he told me.

“USC, UCLA, Auburn and Minnesota, those are the main ones that have offered me since we last spoke.”

I then asked Austin which schools are currently recruiting him the hardest. His answer was quick and concise.

“Notre Dame, Miami, Duke, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio State and Florida.”

I then asked him if he had thought about announcing a top list at some point.

“Yes. Most likely when I go visit throughout this process in the spring and the summer, visiting all the schools that I’m focused on and are focused on me as an athlete. I’m probably going to narrow it down to 5.”

“I might make a commitment at the end of the summer or at the end of my football season but I still want to go on all my 5 official visits. It’ll basically come down to those 5 schools.”

I then asked him which Notre Dame coaches he had been hearing from. Here’s what he told me.

“Coach Alexander, he’s texting me and he’s been talking to me about coming to see me during the spring even if it’s for a track practice or track meet or football practice because last year I went pretty far.”

“I went to Regional in the 100 and the 200 so I wasn’t practicing for a full week and a half for football and just focusing on track as I was trying to get to State. He was telling me that he really wants to see me play football but if it falls on track season, he’s going to come and see me anyways.”

Kevin Austin is impressed with Notre Dame’s current ’18 recruiting class and told me his thoughts on the commits and about the contact he has had with them.

“They have a lot of great, skilled athletes in that class and a lot of great athletes overall.”

“A couple of them have reached out to me and talked to me, saying that they could use me and things like that, over social media, DMing me and things like that, trying to convince me, telling me why they committed, how it’s such a great program. I’ve just been listening and putting it all in my memory.”

Markese Stepp just texted me today and the wide receiver who committed recently from Oregon, Lenzy. They said that they could use me in that offense and that if I was there, they would be an even stronger wide receiver core.”

“The quarterback, Jurkovec, he reached out to me and said that he could look forward to throwing to a big receiver and things like that.”
