Detroit, Cass-Tech Star Kalon Gervin can’t wait to be Irish.

Gervin, one of the best man coverage cornerbacks in the country, committed to Notre Dame on February 13.

Later that day, another top in the country defensive back committed to the Irish as well, Derrik Allen of Georgia.

The two of them took part in the 7-v-7 National Championship in Las Vegas, Nevada with their home state squads. Wide receiver commits Braden Lenzy and Micah Jones also took part in the event.

I caught up with Gervin to find out how he made out at the event as well as get his thoughts on his Notre Dame commitment, the ’18 recruiting class and other thoughts related to his football career.

“I thought I did great. I saw Braden (Lenzy) and we talked real quick. I’m just enjoying the weather out here,” Gervin explained when I asked how the Vegas tournament went.

As Gervin is a very talented cover cornerback, I asked him if teams like Michigan are still after him. His answer was quick, and to the point, as always.

“Many schools are.”

Like a lot of successful cornerbacks, Kalon Gervin is filled with healthy confidence and enthusiasm.

"“I’m going to thrive at Notre Dame! Can’t wait…. I’m ready to play right away” boasted Gervin”"

Gervin then gave me his thoughts on Notre Dame’s current ’18 class.

“It’s growing! I’m cool with them so it’s going to be fun…I think we are building our friendships. We need two more DB’s to solidify our DB core.”

I asked him what his thoughts were on his position coach, Todd Lyght.

“Great dude. He followed me all weekend. They all did, so that was cool.”

I then asked him what he thought about new defensive coordinator, Mike Elko.

“I’ll fit great in his scheme.”

Concerning his commitment, I asked Kalon if it was difficult for him to choose an out of state school and how people around him reacted to his decision.

“It was hard to not stay home. It was a business decision. Daelin (Hayes) called me. Khalid (Kareem) texted me and I was with Ovie (Oghoufo) so it was all love.”

As well as being a dynamic play-maker on the football field, Kalon Gervin is also a talented track performer. I asked him what his 40-yard dash and track times were.

“I run a 4.44 and a 7.00 in the 60.”

Very impressive.

Lastly, I asked him if he had an idea of what he is going to study at Notre Dame. Here’s what he said.

“Communications. Mainly journalism.”

Many, including myself, weren’t very optimistic early in Gervin’s recruitment regarding Notre Dame’s chances of receiving his commitment.

In the past, many top Cass-Tech football players have gone on to play their football at either in-state Michigan or Michigan State, including ’17 Cass-Tech cornerback Jaylen Kelly-Powell who chose Michigan over Notre Dame.

Those thoughts changed for me when I spoke to Gervin a few weeks previous to his commitment when he informed me that he was close friends with ’18 Notre Dame linebacker commit, Ovie Oghoufo, as well as current defensive ends Khalid Kareem and Daelin Hayes.

Notre Dame fans are very excited and relieved that the Irish staff were able to lure in such a high-talent conerback after landing none in the ’17 cycle.

Kalon Gervin is a very welcome addition to the Notre Dame football program and it seems like all the right support is in place to hang on to him until National Signing Day.
