Notre Dame has offered an outstanding ’19 defensive tackle.

Class of ’19 Jowon Briggs spoke with me about how football wasn’t really on his radar earlier in his life. I asked him if football was something he grew up playing and had a love for. This was his response.

“No. I didn’t watch much college sports as a kid. I didn’t watch much football, technically, as a kid unless my family was watching it. All the rest of my family are big football guys. Every time people ask about stats or about a certain player, I usually don’t have any idea of what they’re talking about.”

Briggs went on to explain the reason why he began playing the sport. “My dad. Not only did he want me to play, but he played. He played in college for a year. Then he went to UC (Cincinnati). He also played semi-pro. He just stopped playing semi-pro a year ago.”

Jowon Briggs started playing football in the fifth grade. He eventually noticed what his talent could do for him. “As I started to connect football with school and how football could help further you in life by giving you a free education.”Briggs explained.

He continued by adding, “Around the 8th grade I figured out that something that I enjoyed doing, if I can start to do it at a higher level, and do it well enough to earn myself a scholarship then that would be the way to go.”

“As I figured that out, I decided to work a bit harder in football and see where it can take me.”

Jowon went on to explain how he felt about what a Notre Dame degree could do for him.

“Notre Dame, they’re great as a football team, of course, and as far as academics they’re on a high level.”

"“If you have them in your background in life, when people find out and don’t even know it was for athletics, they say “Oh, you’re from Notre Dame. That’s big time.””"

“I don’t know yet but I’ll know on April 2nd when I visit them,” Briggs said, when I asked him if Notre Dame is in the discussion of schools he see’s himself committing to.

“As far as contact with me, me being 15 still, they aren’t necessarily allowed to contact me. I’d say Ohio State because I’ve actually been there and I like the coaches. They had personal tutoring and internship options,” explained Briggs regarding which schools have been contacting him the most.”

In closing, Jowon Briggs explained other plans that he has for off season visits.

“Sometime at the end of March, I think we’re heading up to Michigan and Michigan State also.”

Jowon Briggs is quite a force at defensive tackle for his high school, especially as a sophomore. I expect him to have a formidable offer list by the time his senior season rolls around. He has a good head on his shoulders and his priorities straight.

I believe he would be a great fit at Notre Dame. Following his visit to South Bend for Notre Dame’s early April Sophomore day, let’s hope he thinks so too.
