The Irish recruiting department is aggressively pursuing talented defensive ends from across the country. Stephon Wynn Jr. almost makes too much sense for the Irish.

  1. He’s one of the best defensive ends in the country, a position of great need.
  2. He plays his ball at IMG Academy.
  3. He has just about the best frame you can find in a high school defensive end.
  4. Not only does he have offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Michigan and nearly every strong Power 5 football program, he has offers from academicly strong schools such as Duke and Vanderbilt.

At 6’4, 260 pounds, Wynn Jr. has the appearance of a starting, college upperclassmen right now as a high school junior.

His ceiling is NFL Pro Bowl. That is a lofty statement, but his measurables, natural athleticism and strength are just that good. If an athlete like Wynn Jr. has a strong GPA, you offer him yesterday.

On film, the only thing I can see that isn’t exceptional yet, is his get off or “first step” that you always here analysts talking about.

I don’t see any reason why this can’t improve plus every other aspect of his game is so strong that his lack of explosion off the snap doesn’t effect his stat line. He’s so strong and his pass rushing skills are so advanced that once he makes his read, he will get to the ball.

Once Wynn Jr. adds an explosive first step, something that should happen, he will be truly elite. He was born to be a defensive lineman. He has exceptionally wide shoulders and long arms which gives him a fantastic tackle radius.

Right now, he’s more of a grab, then react-type defender which is why I think he’s playing the strong side defensive end position. His style may actually be a result of his duties within the defense his program runs, so don’t look to far into his get early progression ways.

It’s too early to say how this recruitment will pan out for Notre Dame. Early indications are that he is strong with the books. It’ll be interesting to see what type of education he is seeking.

If he wants a great education coupled with solid Power 5 football played in front of a National audience every Saturday, then Notre Dame could be a great option for him.

Right now, I look at him as probably a long shot-type kid who is being heavily pursued by SEC country.
