I have done an in-depth breakdown on free safety standout Julius Irvin as well as interviewed Oscar McBride who has been heavily involved with Servite and served as the varsity offensive coordinator for the last two years.
McBride spoke very highly of Julius Irvin and I am personally impressed with his film so I reached out to him last night to get his thoughts on Notre Dame, his offer and to find out a little bit about his recruitment.
“I’ve been really busy down here with my track meets and stuff. Saturday, I had a track meet and Sunday, I had The Opening,” said Irvin.
I started by asking Irvin about how and when contact started between him and the Irish coaching staff, He explained.
“Coach Polian, we were talking for about a week and a half before I got the offer and they were just so impressed with my film and told me that good news was coming for me the next week,” said Irvin. “They just needed some time to look at my transcripts and that and get to know me as a person, so once they figured that out and got all the information, they offered me.”
“My high school is starting up a 7-on-7 team to get the younger guys more reps. I’ll be playing with them but I haven’t played on any 7-on-7 teams so far. I’m just trying to prevent injury and stuff like that,” said Irvin when I asked if he was involved in any off season 7-vs-7 play.
Irvin then told me the specifics of when he got his Irish offer. “Coach Polian phoned me. He went over the defensive staff and said they loved my film so he offered me, him and the defensive staff. It was a rush of excitement and joy because Notre Dame is such a great school,” he said.
With Notre Dame’s history of recruiting Servite Prep, Equanimeous St. Brown and Troy Niklas just to name a few, as well as being connected to ND alumni and former tight end Oscar McBride, it came as no surprise when Irvin was well versed in who Notre Dame is.
“Like I said, it’s a great school, great education, great tradition and known for their football as well as academics. They’re known as a nationwide university and it’s just an honor to have an offer from them.”
Irvin spoke about which coaches he has spoken to and what his visit plans are. “I’ve talked to Coach Elko. I’ve talked to Coach Lyght. I want to plan a visit this spring but it’s going to be tough, but definitely this off season, I want to get up there for sure,” he said.
“Right now, who’s on me the hardest is the University of Oregon. They’re on me really really hard. Number 2 would be Cal and number 3 would be USC and UCLA, tied. Notre Dame is definitely on me hard as well,” said Irvin.
“I put them in the number 4 spot, in terms of who is contacting me the most, I don’t have a top list or school right now. They just haven’t been on me as much right now but earlier, they were on me really hard,” he explained.
Julius told me his plans to narrow things down in the future. “I will be releasing my top list this summer, like a top 6 or a top 8, the schools i’ll let continue recruiting me. Then i’ll release a top 5, but that’s the plan right now and it could change tomorrow or the next week. This is just the plan right now,” explained Irvin.
“The plan is to commit before the season so I can focus on my senior year, but that could change also. It all depends on how I feel, so i’ll try to commit before the season to get it out of the way, because I don’t need the extra stress. So that’s the plan,” he said.
Irvin has been on several visits so far and plans on seeing more. “I’ve been on a visit to Colorado, Utah and I’ve just recently visited UCLA and this spring I plan on visiting Oregon, Washington and Cal,” he stated.
Julius Irvin took a moment to tell me how much he truly enjoys being a student-athlete at Servite and being a football player in the highly competitive Trinity League.
“I’ve been at Servite since my freshman year. I love Servite. It prepares me for the next level and beyond. The friends you meet here and the brotherhood is just amazing. You can’t really find anything else like it,” he said.

Irvin spoke next about the impressive league he plays in. “Competing in the Trinity League is so amazing. It prepares you for the next level as it’s the toughest league in the nation, so you’re playing a bunch of the to players. You’re playing against 5 stars, 4 star guys each and every week, so it prepares you for the next level,” said Irvin, who’s father LeRoy played in the NFL for years.
“I plan on playing a little receiver next year and i return punts and kickoffs,” said Irvin when I asked him what other positions he plans on playing in ’17.
I asked Irvin if distance is going to be a factor in his decision. “That doesn’t really bother me. I keep my options open. Being away from home doesn’t really matter. I just want to go to the best university for me, and the best opportunities that the university will have for me,” he said.
Irvin has a good idea of what he wants to study post-high school. “Right now, I plan to study communications and business, but that could change like anything else. I’m so young right now. Right now, business and communications on my mind,” said Irvin.
Irvin is very impressed with how Notre Dame’s ’18 recruiting class is shaping up.”That’s just amazing,” he said. “Coming into a strong class and potentially winning a championship with the guys from your class is just huge. A school having a huge recruiting class is a plus. It’s impressive, actually. It’s so early on.”
