With Josh Adams and Dexter Williams moving into their junior years in South Bend, and a possibly serious injury popping up with early enrolled C.J. Holmes, Notre Dame staff are seeking to add a second running back to their 2018 class.

On Tuesday, the Irish extended an offer to Jahmir Smith from Sanford, North Carolina. Smith rushed for over 2,100 yards and hit pay dirt 41 times during his junior season.

I caught up with him yesterday to get his thoughts on his Notre Dame offer.

“The Notre Dame offer was very specially and unique because when they offered, they had me, my mom, and my coach on the phone and coach Denson asked for permission to recruit and offer me,” Smith explained.

I asked Smith which schools were paying him the most attention. “I’d say the people trying the hardest to recruit me are UNC, Northwestern, NC State, Duke, Nebraska, and now Notre dame,” stated the 6’0. 195-pound back.

When looking at Jahmir’s stats on Maxpreps.com, I noticed that in his sophomore year, he had rushed for less than 200 yards. I asked Smith what the reason was for his 2,000-yard increase.

“The reason for my jump from sophomore to junior year is because I was at our rival school, Southern Lee, and they never started me. I was the second back. They would give me some carries but not a whole lot” Smith explained.

Changing schools turned out to be extremely beneficial for Smith’s athletic career. “I moved houses because of other reasons and transferred to where I am now, Lee county, and I started here and that’s where football took off for me,” added Lee.

Smith has taken a liking to the Irish staff. “The ND staff seem like really cool, chill, and supportive people. They also pay attention to detail and will make sure you’re the right person,” he said with a laugh. “It was a long process but it’s worth it.”

Notre Dame has offered several running backs in the last month, none of whom put up the numbers that Jahmir Smith did in 2016. Look for an upcoming visit, possibly for the highly anticipated weekend of April 22, the day of the Blue and Gold game.

At this time, Smith holds offers from 23 programs including; North Carolina State, North Carolina, Nebraska, California, Duke, Georgia Tech, Northwestern, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Princeton, Brown and now Notre Dame.
