After coming up dry in the cornerback department in 2017, it appears that the Irish staff have been focusing on adding several at the position in the current cycle, including a few who can play in year one.
Kalon Gervin, who recently earned an invitation to The Opening Finals, is their lone cornerback commit in the ’18 class and possesses the type of talent that will allow him to compete for snaps as soon as he straps on the gold helmet.
The Irish could add as many as three more cornerbacks by next February. Dominique Hampton of Arizona could end up being one of them. I spoke with the 6’2, 180-pound junior to ask him about his recruitment and where things sit with Notre Dame.
“I’ve been in touch with the staff here and there. Different coaches on the staff will reach out to me, one of them being Coach Lyght and they tell me how they like my style of play and they want to get me out there,” stated Hampton.
After the rising junior informed me that he will be visiting South Bend for the spring game, I asked him what he is looking forward to during his visit to the Midwest. “I’ve never been to Indiana and I would like to get to know the area and meet the coaching staff, Replied Hampton.
“I’ll be accompanied by both my parents and my brother,” he added.
Despite being named 5A Northwest First-Team All Region, Hampton has been flying slightly under-the-radar but does have some solid offers and is gaining interest from strong programs and an edit made by the recruiting staff (seen above) appeared on Twitter on Friday.
“So far, I have two offers from Colorado and Arizona. Another school that’s recruiting me heavy, besides those two, would be Notre Dame, but I do have interest from schools like ASU, Kansas State, Wyoming and UNLV,” mentioned Hampton.

I also spoke with Darrell Hampton, Dominique’s father, who is also excited for the trip. “It will be our first time at ND. I played throughout high school, but an injury derailed my career prior to the playoffs during my senior year,” offered Darrell.
Darrell informed me that Dominique isn’t his first son to find success on the gridiron. “Dom’s older brother, DJ, started at cornerback for the University of Idaho and just graduated in December. His playing career culminated with a victory over Colorado State in the famous Idaho Potato Bowl in Boise,” he boasted.
The Notre Dame recruiting department are going to have their hands full on the weekend of April 22. With the Blue and Gold Game hosting most of their 2018 committed recruits as well as numerous hopefuls, there will be a whirlwind of activity and sales pitches flowing through the air.
