Notre Dame football recruit Brian Asamoah won the Linebacker MVP at The Opening Regional in Cleveland on Sunday.

Brian Asamoah arrived at The Opening Regional in Cleveland with an injury that would have kept many athletes from performing. The 6’1″, 209-pound junior remained focused and determined to prove that his consensus 3-star ranking needs an adjustment.

Although the Columbus, Ohio native didn’t test as well as he’d hoped during the individual portion of the camp, his performance during positional drills landed him the Linebacker MVP award over many athletes who rank higher than him at the position.

“I wasn’t satisfied with my testing today,” mentioned Asamoah. “Although I was Linebacker MVP today, I feel like I can do so much more. My score was 81.”

I asked Asamoah which scores he felt he didn’t perform as well as he would have, had he been 100%. “Just my 40 and my power ball toss,” answered Asamoah. “I’m battling a high ankle sprain so that affected my time a little.”

“I ran a 4.9 (40). I threw a 40 but they scratched it so I finished out with a 34 power ball,” he explained.

If you watch Asamoah’s junior season Hudl highlight film (seen near the bottom), you will see that when he is in prime form, he typically runs a much more impressive 40-yard dash than what he ran in Cleveland on Sunday.

Brian Asamoah has had a very active recruitment. The explosive linebacker has racked up 23 offers from strong programs that include Michigan, Penn State, UCLA, Arizona State, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin.

Asamoah originally set a commitment date for April 21 but after receiving a considerable amount of interest over the last few months, he decided to give himself more time to go on more visits.

“I’ve recently slowed down my recruiting process. I’m trying to get out to more schools to see which one would I be a good fit,” stated Asamoah. “I’m looking into my new offers like ND, Michigan State, and Oklahoma.”

Asamoah explained that he has a few visits planned for the near future. “I’m going to Ohio State next weekend and Penn State the following weekend,” added Asamoah.

The rising junior doesn’t have a top list narrowed down as of yet but he did mention a few schools that have been grabbing his attention. “The teams sticking out to me are Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan, Pitt, UCLA, CincinnatiI and West Virginia,” he listed.

Notre Dame is looking to add both linebackers and versatile athletes for the rover position and Asamoah suits both roles well with his size, speed and skill set. Depending on how he grows and develops, he could potentially play either at Notre Dame.

The Irish staff will continue to work on getting Asamoah on campus. Unfortunately, he is already scheduled for a visit during the weekend of the Blue and Gold game, as that would have been a great opportunity to get him on campus.
