Not only have the Fighting Irish finally become a physical threat for the first time in a long time, but they’re excelling at it so quickly that they may be one of the scariest football teams in the NCAA by August. The man behind it all, Matt Balis, has been in South Bend for a little under three months and he’s already done more for the program than most imagined possible.

The strength and conditioning coaches are always the most underappreciated staff members on a football team. But when you go out and hit people for 60 minutes, you’re either in shape, or you’re hurt. Well, prior to this season, Notre Dame wasn’t out of shape, but they were nowhere near where they are now.

It’s all thanks to #BodyByBalis. He and the rest of Notre Dame’s strength staff have transformed the Irish into some freakish human beings. The scariest part is that it’s only April and summer workouts haven’t even begun.

These aren’t just slight changes either. Some of these players look unreal. They go from a smooth stomach to a full-blown six pack, add 15-pounds, and lose body fat. They’re becoming more athletic while still putting on muscle. Absolutely surreal for future NFL hopefuls.

It’s everyone too. From linebackers and safeties to wide receivers and quarterbacks. Everyone is experiencing the new program, and they’re all seeing results. By the time the Irish walk on the field on Sep. 2 against Temple, they’ll be looking like a team of The Hulks just stepped off the bus.

The new coordinators, Chip Long and Mike Elko, are the biggest talks of this Notre Dame offseason. Deservingly, these two are hot names for what they’ve already done in South Bend. Big reasons Notre Dame is already considered a College Football Playoff contender after going 4-8 in 2016 is because of the ideas these two have implemented.

They aren’t the only ones changing this program, though. And by no means, has their impact been any less than Matt Balis. The man is turning a program known to be behind in times into the next generation of athletes. By the time he’s done, he could have schools like Alabama, Florida, and LSU sitting right next to Notre Dame is the physicality portion of college football.

Don’t forget the guy behind the scenes. Notre Dame is going to blow the lid off the NCAA in 2017. Long and Elko are important reasons why, but not the only two names that deserve credit. Balis is making these young men into true monsters, and it’s early. When the freshmen arrive on campus, they’ll be the next group to see results.

It’s a game-changer that’ll affect this Notre Dame program for years to come. Balis is three months into turning this team into athletic freaks of nature. Imagine how it’ll be after he’s worked with some 2017 freshmen for four years.

Every addition to this new coaching staff deserves credit for changing a 4-8 team into a contender before the Blue and Gold Game. But what Mat Balis is doing is something no one expected could happen this quickly.

#BodyByBalis has arrived in Notre Dame. Now, it’s time to see what the Fighting Irish can do when they become next level athletes.
