The 2017 Blue and Gold game will be the first time Notre Dame football shows their change since a 4-8 season in 2016.

Behind Brian Kelly and new offensive coordinator, Chip Long, Notre Dame’s offense is primed to be one of the best in 2017. With new starting quarterback, Brandon Wimbush, working with a trio backfield of Josh Adams, Dexter Williams, and Tony Jones Jr., this offensive attack should be one of the most dangerous units in college football.

On the outside, Equanimeous St. Brown is ready to take over the NCAA. After leading Notre Dame in receiving last season, ESB returns with a receiving core stacked to the brim with talent. From Chase Claypool, Miles Boykins, and Kevin Stepherson at wideout and Durham Smythe and Aliz’e Jones at tight end, this group of pass catchers is crazy good.

Then, there’s the defense. Led by Nyles Morgan at linebacker and Drue Tranquill at safety, this group looks to redeem themselves from an atrocious 2016. This year, they bring a new defensive coordinator in Mike Elko and a scheme ready to ruin offensive across the country.

The biggest addition to this defense is the added position of the Rover. As more of a coverage position for a player who can be a sure tackler, but defend the ball in the air, the Rover will add help to the linebacking core and secondary.

Drue Tranquill will likely get first dibs at the starting job. From what he’s shown in spring practice, he is the perfect size and has the right skill set for the job. He’s always reliable on an open field takedown, but can drop back in coverage and make a play when needed.

This game should bring a lot of excitement to Notre Dame. After an embarrassing showing last year, they need this game to carry enough momentum into the regular season. With the roster they have, though, excitement and energy shouldn’t be a problem to produce.
