Slap the Sign continues with games 5 through 8 today. In a previous post, we predicted that Notre Dame would win 3 out of 4 games to start to the season with the only loss coming to Georgia. Here are the next 4 predictions for the 2017 Notre Dame Football team:
Miami (OH) – 2016 Record: 6-7
Former Offensive Coordinator Chuck Martin returns to South Bend as the Head Coach of Miami (OH). After losing their first 6 games, the Redhawks rallied to win their next 6 games and become bowl eligible. Miami (OH) then lost a tightly contested game against Mississippi State in the St. Petersburg Bowl.
The Redhawks return 15 starters from their 2016 squad. Can Martin, a long time Kelly assistant, make a huge 3rd year jump like his former boss did at Notre Dame in 2012? It appears like an uphill battle for Miami (OH) as the Redhawks face Marshall, Cincinnati, Central Michigan and Notre Dame in September.
Notre Dame needs to blowout Miami (OH) to generate rest for the starters, develop younger talent and impress the College Football Playoff committee. However, Martin likely prevents this from happening. He knows too much about how Kelly operates. Martin does not know as much about new Defensive Coordinator Mike Elko and Offensive Coordinator Chip Long. Additionally, only the current Seniors and Graduate players played on the last team that Martin coached at Notre Dame.
Martin possesses the knowledge and ability to make this a closer game then it may otherwise be. The Notre Dame football roster simply features too much talent for Miami (OH) to seriously compete.
