Notre Dame Football Grades: Offense vs. Miami (OH)
By Andrew Hall
The Wide Receivers and Tight Ends performed well enough for Notre Dame to have some success on Saturday evening. However, the Offensive Line showed why they are considered one of the most dominant groups in the country.
The Irish receivers continued to improve on Saturday evening. Six Notre Dame Receivers caught passes including Miles Boykin, Chris Finke, Equanimeous St. Brown, Chase Claypool, Michael Young and Kevin Stepherson. Claypool and St. Brown caught the majority of the passes.
Their lack of production was not completely their fault on this occasion. Wimbush was inaccurate. The Wide Receivers need to get better. However, they seem to be taking the steps.
Durham Smythe, Alize Mack and Nic Weishar did not record a catch against the Redhawks. The group as whole did assist well in the running game by blocking well.
On Adams’ 2nd touchdown run, 5th-year Tight End Durham Smythe helped open up a huge hole on the right side.
Freshman Tight End Cole Kmet also threw a great block on McIntosh’s touchdown run in the 4th Quarter.
The Notre Dame Offensive Line played a fairly complete game on Saturday. They plowed the way to 333 yards on the ground. In addition, when Wimbush dropped back to pass, the Irish line gave Wimbush all day to throw. The group should have dominated against this type of opponent and they did.
During Saturday’s game, the Irish offense did not play extremely consistent for 4 quarters. However, they did not need a perfect game to beat the Miami (OH) Redhawks. After delivering a knockout punch against in the 1st Quarter, Notre Dame tried to work on their passing game. This lead to the team looking less than perfect on Saturday. It is impressive that this team can play inconsistent football and still score 52 points.
The Notre Dame football team moves on to play a wounded North Carolina Tar Heel team this week.
