Notre Dame’s future looked bright for a second. Now it could be truly outlined by a gray October sky.

The faith of the Irish’s season could begin to look shaky. QB Brandon Wimbush was reported walking around campus in a walking boot per Pete Sampson on Monday. Sampson was asked on twitter about a rumor and responded that at least the boot part was true.

Sampson then went on to remind the twitter world that rumors often are not true. But then addressed that Wimbush does have a foot injury.

Notre Dame Head Coach Brian Kelly confirmed these “rumors” on Tuesday afternoon during his press conference.

The Irish moved up to 21st in the most recent AP polls. The remaining seven games look winnable. This could put them in the discussion for a major bowl or even a possible College Football Playoff birth.

Wimbush had his ups and downs this season. Some games looked shaky and questionable if he could do the job. Other times he looked like the guy who Brian Kelly was confident could lead this Irish team.

More from Notre Dame Football

Against Boston College, Wimbush struggled to hit his receivers, often over throwing them. This a huge problem when you recognize how tall the wide receivers are for Notre Dame.

Right after that poor performance, Wimbush quieted the doubts, completing 14 of his 20 attempts for a completions rate of 70%.

Last week, against Miami (OH), Wimbush again struggled to find his rhythm. Statistically, this was his worst game throwing for 7 of 18, a completion rate of only 38.9%.

No matter how you feel about him, the consensus is you have to feel more comfortable about the Irish’s chances this season with Wimbush in the game.

Could the Freshman be next?

This could keep Wimbush out, next in line for the Irish would be Freshman Ian Book. Once a Washington State commit, Book ended up taking an unofficial visit to South Bend and switched his commitment to the Irish three days later.

Book was regarded highly in the spring but to be thrown in the middle of the season to lead Notre Dame Football, is no easy task. Not to mention he comes in as a pro-style QB. Obviously different and something the entire offense will have to adjust to.
