Prediction #2: The defense will look just alright

Compared to last year, this defense is amazing. Mike Elko has done wonders for Notre Dame and has been a big part of this 6-1 start. But the problem is the improvement off of last season is not saying much.

While I do think the defense has made huge strides and deserves all the respect they have been giving this year, this week could be a wake-up call.

More from Notre Dame Football

Notre Dame will be without linebacker Greer Martini who is now week-to-week. Martini underwent arthroscopic knee surgery last Thursday during the bye week to repair a meniscus tear. A huge blow for the Irish as Martini is their 3rd leading tackler on the team.

Sam Darnold comes in with his Heisman campaign season hopes. 2,063 passing yards with a completion percentage of 63%. At one point considered the number one NFL prospect, Darnold has spread the wealth well. 16 different USC players have caught passes from Darnold.

If there is a weakness in his game, its turnovers. Darnold has turned the ball over 16 times this season. Nine interceptions and seven fumbles in just seven games this season has proved to be a problem for the Trojans, a problem that the Irish may be able to take advantage of. Notre Dame has done a great job forcing turnovers this season. Most notably Julian Loves’ pick sick to help defeat Michigan State

Maybe the key to a Notre Dame win this Saturday. USC has a high-powered offense, but a fumble or interception at just the right time could prove to be detrimental for the Trojans.
