Notre Dame football recruiting is beginning to take off. The recent success for the Irish on the field is prompting many recruits to consider Notre Dame. One of these recruits is Cade Mays.

The decline of Tennessee and the surge of Notre Dame caused 5-star Offensive Tackle Cade Mays to rethink his commitment. The 6’6″ 318 lbs. prospect from Knoxville, Tennessee will visit South Bend on Dec. 8.

Mays attends Knoxville Catholic. If the name of that school sounds familiar, it is because NFL Pro Bowl Safety and Notre Dame alum Harrison Smith hails from Knoxville Catholic. That connection and Offensive Line coach Harry Hiestand are driving the decision for Mays to look at Notre Dame.

The Knoxville Catholic product ranks highly among the many recruiting services. The 247Sports Composite, an aggregate of all recruiting services, ranks 15th overall in the 2018 class. As an Offensive Tackle, he ranks 2nd.

Mays holds offers from several schools including Clemson, Georgia, Ohio State, Alabama, Florida State, Ole Miss and Texas A&M. He originally committed to Tennessee on July 15, 2015. His commitment to the Vols is now in question. Along with his trip to Notre Dame, he will also visit Georgia, Ohio State, Clemson, and Tennessee.

Another name Notre Dame is pursuing at Offensive Tackle is Nicholas Petit-Frere from Berkley Prep in Tampa, Florida. Currently, the Irish might be the favorite to land the nation’s 42nd best player. A possible commitment from Petit-Frere may alter Notre Dame’s pursuit of Mays. The Irish need interior Offensive Linemen after the loss of Tristen Hoge and Parker Boudreaux.

However, whenever a coaching staff has an opportunity to land elite talent, they are unlikely to turn it away. Mays and Petite-Frere are potential future NFL players. As evidenced by this season, the Irish need to continue to land these types of players if they wish to stay competitive on the field.
