Notre Dame football recruiting has swung into full gear with another commitment.

Following a visit to South Bend this weekend, Joe Wilkins Jr. committed to Notre Dame. He becomes the 19th commitment in the 2018 class.

Wilkins hails from North Fort Meyers, Florida and plays for North Fort Meyers High School. He holds offers from several schools including N.C. State, Kentucky and Michigan State.

The North Fort Myers product checks in at 6’2″ and 180 lbs. According to the 247Sports Composite, Wilkins is the 697th best prospect in the 2018 class. He also rates as the 59th Athlete. Although he is listed as an athlete, he will most likely play Cornerback at the next level.

He planned on visiting N.C. State and Kentucky. However, these plans appear to be off due to his commitment to Notre Dame.

Notre Dame currently sits as the 8th best-recruiting class in the country. The Irish currently sit sandwiched in between Florida and Oklahoma.

Who’s Next?

Notre Dame now pursues commitment No. 20. Who will be the next to pull the trigger in favor of the Irish? It could be a few players including DB Kyler Gordon, DB Julius Irvin, WR Amon-ra St. Brown, OL Chris Murray or OT Nicholas Petit-Freer to name a few.

At this point, Notre Dame may become more selective with only a few spots left in the class. Most likely, the Irish will take about 5 more players in the 2018 class. They need to make those 5 prospects count. That means the Notre Dame coaching staff is more likely to pursue players like Amon-Ra St. Brown who have a 5-star pedigree.

As it stands right now, the Fighting Irish sit approximately 6 over the scholarship limit for next year. This number includes players such as Pete Mokwah who likely most likely depart after graduating. In addition, every season, someone decides to leave the program who fans are not expecting.
