Notre Dame extended a scholarship offer to St. John’s College High School prospect DJ Brown on Wednesday.

Following the conclusion of Notre Dame’s season, the Irish coaches hit the road to pursue the nation’s top prospects. One of those prospects, DJ Brown, received a Notre Dame offer. Now, armed with an Irish offer, Brown could be the next member of the 2018 Notre Dame football recruiting class.

Brown is currently committed to Virginia. He pledged to the Cavaliers on July 6. Before giving his verbal commitment to Virginia, he received offers from Missouri, Arizona, Army, Ball State, Boston College, Marshall, Memphis, Rutgers, Stanford and Vanderbilt among others.

His offers are mostly “Group of 5” and mid-level “Power 5” offers. His offers from Stanford, Vanderbilt, and Virginia are an indication of his strong academic record. Based on these offers, this appears to be a smart move by the Irish coaching staff.

Brown ranks below where Notre Dame fans hope. According to the 247Sports Composite, he ranks as the 117th CB and 1300th player nationally. At this point, recruiting “experts” base their rankings on a recruit’s Junior season and summer prior to their Senior season. Most likely, Notre Dame evaluated his Senior film and moved towards offering Brown.

Last year, Notre Dame pursued another St. John’s College product, Kofi Wardlow. At the time, Wardlow was committed to the Maryland Terrapins. Wardlow eventually flipped his commitment and signed with the Irish.

Houston Griffith Backs Off Florida State Pledge

With the uncertainty surrounding Jimbo Fisher’s future at Florida State, Houston Griffith backed off his commitment. Despite his pledge to the Seminoles, Notre Dame continued to pursue the top Cornerback commitment. Now, the Irish might be in the driver’s seat for the 4-star Cornerback from IMG Academy.

Regardless of whether it is Griffith or Brown, Notre Dame desperately needs more Defensive Backs in this class. Last year, the Irish did not land a single Cornerback commitment.
