With Ohio State and Wisconsin playing in New Year’s Six bowls, Notre Dame lands in the Citrus Bowl against LSU.

At the beginning of the day, several options were possible for the Fighting Irish including a New Year’s Six Bowl, the Citrus Bowl and the Camping World Bowl. At the end of the day (actually in the afternoon), Notre Dame accepted a bid to play in the Citrus Bowl against Louisiana State on Jan. 1.

The Irish face the Tigers for the first time since Dec. 2014. In the Music City Bowl, Notre Dame defeated LSU, 31-28. This victory gave Irish tremendous momentum for the off-season. The next season, Notre Dame ended up winning 10 games and playing in the Fiesta Bowl.

The 2017 version of the Notre Dame football team looks to grab some of that momentum with a victory against LSU. Since rising to No. 3 in the College Football Playoff poll, the Irish have suffered mass setbacks. On Nov. 11, the Hurricanes blew out the Irish, 41-8. On Nov. 25, Stanford defeated Notre Dame as well. In their victories, the Irish have not looked like the same team that beat USC and NC State handily.

LSU enters this game as the No. 17 team in the country. This year, they tallied a 9-3 record. Their biggest victory came against No. 7 Auburn. This group will be a formidable matchup for the Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame – LSU Bowl History

This is not the first time these teams have met in a bowl game. In fact, it will be the fourth time these two storied programs battle in the post-season.

The Irish and Tigers first met in a bowl in 1997 when they played a regular season rematch in the Independence Bowl. LSU defeated Notre Dame, 27-9.

Nine years later, the Irish and Tigers met in the Sugar Bowl. Notre Dame was extremely overmatched. With a great performance by future No. 1 pick Jamarcus Russell, LSU crushed the Fighting Irish, 41-14.

Notre Dame got revenge in Dec. 2014 when they beat the Tigers, 31-28.

The Irish look to make it two in a row on New Year’s Day.
