Outlined against a blue-gray November sky, the Irish and Orange will battle in one of the most storied venues in American sports.

On Nov. 17, 2018, the Notre Dame football team returns to the hallowed ground that originally sparked the Fighting Irish into the college football elite. When Notre Dame faces Syracuse next season, it will take place at Yankee Stadium.

Although it is not the original Yankee Stadium, the venue still possesses a lot of the same mystique. The Fighting Irish have played in the Bronx on twenty-seven occasions.

In 2013, Notre Dame played against Rutgers in the Pinstripe Bowl. With 47,122 onlookers, the Fighting Irish defeated the Scarlet Knights, 29-16.

In 2010, the Irish donned green jerseys against Army. In a throwback to the days of Grantland Rice, Notre Dame defeated the Black Knights, 27-3.

This is not the first time these two programs have played in Yankee Stadium. Syracuse and Notre Dame played in the original ballpark in 1963. This game holds more significance than a unique neutral site battle. On Thanksgiving Day 1963, Notre Dame played their first game following the assassination of John F. Kennedy. The game occurred five days following the president’s slaying in Dallas. Unfortunately, the Irish dropped the game, 14-7.

Recently, the Fighting Irish have dominated the ‘Cuse. Last season, Notre Dame grabbed one of their four victories in Metlife Stadium. DeShone Kizer and the Irish came out with guns blazing as they charged to a 50-33.

In 2014, Everett Golson completed 25 straight passes against the Orange. Despite 5 turnovers, Notre Dame cruised to victory, 31-15.

Despite leading the series, Notre Dame suffered an extremely embarrassing loss to Syracuse in 2008. Jimmy Clausen and the Fighting Irish lost to an 8-loss Orange team, 24-23. The defeated marked the first time Notre Dame lost to a team with 8-or-more losses.

This contest also restarts the annual Shamrock Series contest. Notre Dame won all of the previous Shamrock Series games.
