Notre Dame Football: “The Waiver Wire” – Quarterback Transfer Options for the Irish
By Andrew Hall
Later this week, Slap the Sign will look at next year’s Notre Dame football roster and the Quarterback situation. However, the answer to the Quarterback spot might currently sit on someone else’s roster. Here are possible players on the “waiver wire.” 247Sports listed a few names that built relationships with Notre Dame during the recruiting process.
Immediate Eligibility
Kyle Allen, Houston
The former Texas A&M Quarterback enrolled at Houston in 2017 with hopes of resurrecting his career. However, under new Head Coach Major Applewhite, Allen failed to catch on.

After throwing for 1322 yards and 2210 yards in his first two seasons in College Station, Allen transferred to Houston after losing his starting spot. Before his time at Texas A&M, UCLA, Notre Dame, and Texas A&M primarily competed for Allen’s services.
Brian Kelly and Allen established a relationship during his initial recruitment. The addition of Allen might help the Irish offense.
Brandon Dawkins, Arizona
At one point, Dawkins attempted to commit to Notre Dame. However, the Irish staff did not want to take his commitment. Dawkins ended up at Arizona while Notre Dame ended up taking DeShone Kizer.
In Tucson, Dawkins played significantly during the 2016 season. He completed 53.6% of his passes for 1345 yards with 8 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. Dawkins added 944 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground.
Would Dawkins want to finally commit to Notre Dame (for real)?
Sit-and-Wait
Shane Buechele, Texas
Buechele destroyed Notre Dame in September 2016. He threw for 280 yards against the Irish. When Charlie Strong left and Tom Herman entered, Buechele lost favor in the offense.
Sam Ehlinger became the Quarterback of the future for the Longhorns. Where does leave Buechele? The Longhorns plan to start him in the bowl game but his long-term future is murky.
Jacob Eason, Georgia
This year, Jacob Eason suffered an injury against Appalachian State. That gave way to Jacob Fromm who appears poised to not relinquish the job.

Eason’s father, Tony, played at Notre Dame. That connection with the Irish could lead to Eason transferring to Notre Dame. However, he might not fit with the Irish offense. Eason is not a super athletic Quarterback. He has a huge arm that would definitely improve Notre Dame’s passing attack.
