Notre Dame Football: Vegas Has Wimbush As a Top 20 Heisman Candidate
By J.P. Scott
Notre Dame football quarterback Brandon Wimbush is among the Top 20 Heisman candidates according to oddsmakers.
One of the bigger stories surrounding Notre Dame football this offseason was the question of whether or not Brandon Wimbush could hold off Ian Book for the starting job at quarterback. All signs seem to be resoundingly pointing to “Yes” at this point — albeit to the dismay of some passionate Irish fans.
When it comes to Wimbush’s projected performance in 2018, some Vegas oddsmakers believe Wimbush is among the Top 20 favorites to win the Heisman Trophy this season.
BOVADA has Wimbush as No. 19 on their list, according to his odds to win the award. He is a +3500 bet.
Winbush is the only Notre Dame player on the list at this point and one of 16 total quarterbacks.
The players who currently have better odds than Wimbush are as follows:
Johnathan Taylor, RB, Wisconsin (+600)
J.K. Dobbins, RB, Ohio State (+650)
Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Alabama (+700)
Bryce Love, RB, Stanford (+700)
Jake Fromm, QB, Georgia (+1200)
Khalil Tate, QB, Arizona (+1400)
Jarrett Stidham, QB, Auburn (+1600)
Justin Hebert, QB, Oregon (+1800)
Trace McSorely, QB, Penn State (+1800)
Will Grier, QB, West Virginia (+2000)
Kelly Bryant, QB, Clemson (+2000)
Jake Browning, QB, Washington (+2200)
Dwayne Haskins, QB, Ohio State (+2200)
Cam Akers, RB, Florida State (+2500)
Rodney Anderson, RB, Oklahoma (+2500)
Drew Lock, QB, Missouri (+2500)
McKenzie Milton, QB, Central Florida (+2800)
D’Andre Swift, RB, Georgia (+2800)
The Irish have not had a Heisman Tropy winner since Tim Brown took home the award in 1987. The closest an Irish player has come to winning the award since then was in 2012, when Manti Te’o finished second to Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel.
