Notre Dame Football recruiting landed a big one today!

2019 offensive lineman John Olmstead from New Jersey has committed to Notre Dame. He announced his decision this afternoon. Olmstead had a top five that included Michigan, Rutgers, Ole Miss and Minnesota. The Irish held them off for his commitment.

I think Minnesota was the biggest competition, mainly because of his relationship with their whole staff, but Notre Dame just always seemed like the final destination for Olmstead. His last visit to South Bend was April 9th and I don’t think the staff had any doubt they would land the promising lineman.

At the moment, he holds 34 offers, to include those from Ohio State, LSU, Penn State.

What will Olmstead bring?

The 6’6 295 pound lineman just plays down right angry. Personally, I like him at guard and feel like that would work out best once he gets to Notre Dame. Of course he still has some work to do when it comes to technique, and his punch drive needs to be stronger when he initially gets his hands on someone. That said, he’s got really good bend for the position and he will continue to grow and get stronger.

The biggest thing I take away from his game is that he’s actually really quick from the start getting his hands on his opponent. The in-depth knowledge of technique will come in time for him, as will gaining upper body strength. Overall, he’s a real solid lineman who I think will flourish in South Bend.

New offensive line coach Jeff Quinn has done a great job recruiting here. I know a lot of people were really concerned when the Irish lost Harry Heistand to the NFL, but make no mistake — Quinn is an excellent recruiter when it comes to his guys. He was the one that put the finishing touches on Olmstead deciding that Notre Dame was the place.

It looks like the staff is trying to add around four or five offensive line recruits to this class. With the players that the Irish staff have on their board right now, this could be one of the best o-line classes in the entire country.

It’s a big weekend ahead as the Notre Dame Spring game is this Saturday, along with a ton of recruits visiting for the weekend. Could there be another lineman joining #FightClub19? I wouldn’t be surprised at all if there’s another one in the class real soon. Stay tuned!
