Nathan Erbach: Notre Dame at Southern Cal, 2012

My favorite Notre Dame game day experience came back in 2012. Notre Dame was on the verge of a BCS National Championship birth, and their biggest rival — USC — was the only thing standing in their way.

I was a freshman in college and never had the opportunity to take in a Notre Dame game before. My uncle is an alumni and offered my dad and I his USC tickets. We received the tickets prior to the season, so we had no idea what we were about to witness. We were just excited to attend a game.

USC was a great a host. A lot of their game day traditions are similar to other big time schools. It was cool to see all of the tailgating and just the atmosphere of big time college football blue bloods about to go at it.

We know how the story ends.

The Irish went into the Coliseum and beat the Trojons to finish the regular season ranked No.1 in the country. Chants of Manti Te’o echoed throughout the stadium as the game came closer to end, and the vaunted 2012 defense came up with a huge goal line stop in the fourth quarter. As many USC fans as there were, Notre Dame blue and gold was evident as you looked through the crowd.

Although, it wasn’t a South Bend game day experience (that I have been apart of since), I’ll never forget my first live experience watching my beloved Fighting Irish. Defeating USC to go the championship game surely helped.
