Notre Dame Football: Writers Play Fact or Fiction
Statement No. 5: Over the 2018-19 NCAA calendar, Brian Kelly’s football team has a better shot of winning the National Championship than Mike Bray’s basketball team.
JP: Fact. The football team returns the core of an elite defense, players at the skill positions with a lot of experience and play a schedule where — as mentioned — they don’t need to run the table to get a shot at the title. The basketball team lost a ton of talent and leadership and play in one of the top two or three basketball conferences in the country.
Jack: Fact. This is a low bar to clear, as both teams are not very close to contending for a national championship. The losses the Irish basketball team suffered after the end of last season are far more significant than those of the football team. Notre Dame’s basketball team had an impressive recruiting class this past cycle, but those guys will need a year or two to develop before they can make a run in the tournament. In addition to that, the chances of winning the NCAA Tournament are much slimmer than the odds of winning the College Football Playoff.

Sonny: Fact. Losing Bonzie Colson and Matt Farrell is huge for the basketball team, especially when one guy can make a team a Championship contender (looking at you, Cavs.) Both teams have a little ways to go, but given the talent lost on the basketball team versus who left on the football side, the football team is clearly in a better position as of now. However, with as strong as recruiting has been, this may be a totally different conversation in a couple of years.
